Funding Payroll

Where the money for each payroll run comes from, what to do when funding needs your action, and what happens when a funding debit is returned.

Everee pays workers from the company's own money. When you approve a payroll run, Everee collects the run's funding from the company's funding account, then pays each worker's net pay. This page covers that funding: where it comes from, how to follow it, and what to do when it doesn't go through.

The funding account

The company's signer connects the funding bank account in the embedded signing experience during onboarding, so you never handle the company's bank credentials. See Signing the agreements.

The company's funding type decides how early a run can pay: the earliest targetPayDate you can choose depends on it, and an off-cycle run uses the company's funding type for ad hoc payments. A pay date that's too early returns 400 naming the earliest date allowed. See Pay dates and deadlines.

If the funding account is disconnected, the company gets a FUNDING_ACCOUNT_DISCONNECTED requirement, and runs are blocked until it's reconnected.

Following the funding

Once a run is approved, retrieve its funding to see the amount, transfer type, date and status. Before approval it returns 404.

UNDER_REVIEWEveree is reviewing it before sending it

FUNDEDThe money was collected
FAILEDThe debit failed or was returned

Everee sends payroll-run.funded when a funding is collected, and payroll-run.funding-failed when one fails, each with the funding. See Payroll Run Events.

When funding needs your action

Everee may hold a run's funding before sending it, for example when the funding account doesn't have enough money, or when the run is funded by wire. The funding's status is then NEEDS_ACTION, with resolutionInstructions, and the run is PROCESSING_BLOCKED.

  1. Do what resolutionInstructions says: move money into the account, or send the wire.
  2. Retry the funding before the run's processingBlockedDeadline. The run goes back to PROCESSING. A funding held for insufficient funds is sent when the account's balance covers it; any other goes back to review.

If the deadline passes first, the run goes back to OPEN. Approve it again, for a later pay date.

A retry's funding names the funding it replaced in previousFundingId.

When a funding debit is returned

The company's bank can return a funding debit after Everee has sent it, for example for insufficient funds (NSF):

  • Before workers were paid, the run goes back to OPEN with a FUNDING_FAILED blocker. Make sure the account has the money, then calculate and approve the run again.
  • After workers were paid, the company gets a FUNDING_FAILED requirement, and no payroll run can be approved until the debit is repaid: approving returns 409. Transfer it to Everee Customer Success to arrange repayment.

Everee sends payroll-run.funding-failed either way.
